Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe

Brief Profile:

A consummate environmental professional with a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (Climate Change Policy), a Professional Master’s in environmental management, and both first and second degrees in Biological Sciences (Zoology).

With over 20 years of experience in environment and sustainable development, climate change, energy, and related fields, she has worked across government, the private sector, NGOs, and international organizations.

In addition to her core academic training, she holds several professional affiliations, including:

  • Fellow, Global Network of Leaders in Environment and Sustainable Development (LEAD)
  • Alumna, United States International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) – Nominated for her outstanding career performance in environmental management, she participated in the prestigious IVLP on Exploring Environmental Issues.
  • Awardee, 2013 KOICA-Supported Country Project on Green Nigeria – Recognized by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for contributions to sustainable waste management in response to climate change.
  • Honorary Member, Korean Environmental Cooperation (KEco)
  • Awardee, 2016 Green Nigeria Project on Climate Change Advocacy – Supported by the Michelle Obama Young African Women Leaders Forum.

VISION: A climate-resilient and low-carbon Nigeria, where sustainable development thrives in harmony with the environment

MISSION: To coordinate activities towards the national implementation of the Climate Change Convention by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Climate Change Department engages in partnership and Collaboratory Programs and activities with relevant Stakeholders to implement Nigeria’s climate policies, strategies, and commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. It facilitates national climate governance, ensures compliance with international obligations, promotes climate resilience, and drives low-carbon development through policy formulation, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building.
