Usman Abdullahi Bokani

Brief Profile:

Mr. Usman A. B. is a Geologist/Environmentalist, a meticulous field officer, and a proficient administrator, a professional with strong leadership and relationship-building skills, talented in team building, training, and conceptualizing ideas with many years of work experience in different capacities. His expertise includes Policy formulation on environmental and Geological issues, geological surveys, and interpretations

He is an alumnus of the Federal University of Technology, Minna and holds an MSc in environmental and Waste Management from the University of Glamorgan, South Wales, United Kingdom. He is a member of the Nigerian Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS), Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) and Member, Waste Management Society of Nigeria.

Erosion Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department

VISION: To executes the environment policy mandate on Erosion, Flood and Coastal/River Bank Erosion Control activities in the country.

MISSION:To coordinate, formulate, and carry out the implementation of policies, programs and projects designed to prevent, reduce, and control land degradation arising from soil erosion, flooding, coastal and riverbank erosion.

Structure:

The Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management (EF & CZM) is structured into four Divisions namely:

  • Erosion Monitoring and Control (EMC) Division
  • Flood Forecasting, Monitoring and Control (FFMC) Division
  • Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Division
  • Water Harvesting and Management (WHM) Division

Each Division is headed by a Deputy Director.  The Divisions are further subdivided into Branches.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department is responsible for the following;

  • Formulation, Coordination, Management and Implementation of National Policy on Erosion and Flood Control Nationwide.
  • Monitoring, assessment, mapping, inventorization, and generation of baseline environment data for the prevention, mitigation, and control of hydro-meteorological-related disasters in Nigeria;
  • Land reclamation and preparation of soil conservation policy and master plan towards efficient soil/erosion control;
  • Protection and Management of Coastal Shoreline and major rivers in the country.
  • Monitoring and mitigating the impact of Global Climate Change as it affects Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone
  • Flood Prevention by Water Harvesting Techniques – earth-filled embankments and detention/retention reservoirs;
  • Liaise with relevant Government Organs for the formulation of resettlement strategies, emergency preparedness plans, and sociological aspects of coping with floods in affected areas in the country.
  • Carry out Studies, Designs, and Construction of Soil Erosion, Flood Control, Coastal Zone Management Control, and Flood Water Harvesting Structures.
  • Public enlightenment on prevention, mitigation, and control of Flood, Erosion and Coastal Zone Degradation.
  • Operation and Maintenance of installed physical structures for control of flood and erosion, to ensure optimum efficiency and achievement of designed life spans of such structures.
